Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is the holistic practice of using volatile plant oils, called Essential Oils, for psychological and physical well-being.
Essential oils are the pure essence of the plant, usually found in the liquid that is extracted by steam or alcohol from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, root, grasses, or seeds of the plant.
The practice of Aromatherapy dates back 5000 years, making it one of the oldest Holistic Healing Methods. It began with the Egyptians who used Infusions of the oils in their medicine, cosmetics, and embalming.
Picture Cleopatra, King Tut, and all those preserved mummies.
Aromatics were also used in ancient practices of Chinese Massage and Acupuncture.
Ayurveda , the traditional medical system of India, used Aromatherapy as well as fresh and dried Herbs in its healing treatments.
Aromatherapy can be administered in different ways. The Essential Oils can be Inhaled, Massaged into the skin, added to the Bath, or Diffused into the air. The molecules of the oil appear to enter the blood stream through the fine hairs in the nose and from there enter the limbic system in the brain. The Limbic System controls moods, emotions, memory, and learning.
When choosing Essential Oils, it is important to choose 100% Pure Essential Oils, not fragrance or perfume oils. These other oils are not the same as Essential Oils. They contain unnatural or synthetic chemicals and do not provide the Benefits of Natural Essential Oils.
Essential Oils are also very powerful and concentrated. They must be diluted by a Carrier Oil before being placed on the skin. Common carrier oils include Sweet Almond, Apricot Kernel, and Grapeseed Oil. These oils are chosen depending on the property of the oil that is needed.
The practice of Aromatherapy has been passed on from civilization to civilization because the therapies have worked so well. During the Great Plagues of the Middle Ages healers discovered that Burning Aromatics helped prevent the spread of the disease.
It was noted that the workers in the Lavender fields and the tanners who perfumed the fine leather goods survived the Plague while their wealthy masters perished. We can use this information to our advantage today.
We know that Clove, Eucalyptus, and Tea Tree Oils can be sprayed into the air to kill airborne diseases. Lavender, Rosemary, Tea Tree, and Thyme Oils can be added to bath water to disinfect skin.
Knowing which oils affect our Mental and Emotional Health is important to your overall Well-Being, also. For instance, the Essential Oil of Vanilla can relieve Stress. Chamomile, Jasmine, and Patchouli are good for Anxiety. Bergamot, Rosemary, and Sage are effective against Depression.
After studies in Japan, engineers added Lavender and Rosemary to the ventilation system of customer waiting rooms to keep customers calm. Upon finding that the scent of Lemon and Eucalyptus kept test subjects alert, these aromas are now piped into banks to keep the tellers alert.
Textbooks may agree on General Properties of each Essential Oil, but you may React differently to one than I do. We will have different body chemistries, physical environments, and mental states. Even the time of day can influence your reaction.
You should pay attention to Your Reaction to the oil. Is it pleasing? Does it have the desired effect? If not, try another one. There are no hard and fast rules.
