Acupuncture the evidence

Acupuncture is a treatment growing in popularity in the UK and the programme demonstrated an experiment being conducted by Hugh MacPherson, Senior Research Fellow at the University of York. This mapped the effect of acupuncture on brain structures with both MRI and MEG scanners at the newly opened York Neuroimaging Centre.

The team found that superficial needling resulted in activation of the motor areas of the cortex, a normal reaction to the sensation of touch. But with deep needling, the brain’s limbic system, which is part of the pain matrix, was deactivated, a result that could not have been predicted from what we know about neural pathways. This line of research suggests that the deactivation of the pain matrix may explain in part the mechanism by which acupuncture has an effect when used to treat chronic pain.

Paxil and Pregnancy: A Toxic Combination

Pregnant women and those who plan to become pregnant are at an increased risk of having babies born with certain birth defects if they are taking the anti-depressant Paxil during their first three months of pregnancy.

These warnings come from the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration), Health Canada, and the drug maker GlaxoSmithKline. GSK is the manufacturer of Paxil, or paroxetine, the most commonly used anti-depressant among the pregnant women included in a study from Quebec, Canada.

This study included all pregnancies in Quebec between January 1, 1997, through June 30, 2003.

The study found that pregnant "women who took more than 25 mg of Paxil a day during the first trimester of pregnancy were an increased risk of having an infant with major congenital malformations...or major cardiac malformations."

So, if you are, or someone you love is, considering becoming pregnant and is currently taking the prescription drug Paxil for depression, consult your health care professional about alternative methods of controlling your depression while you attempt to conceive, and during your first three months of pregnancy, at least.

Go to the Holistic Intent Website for more information on holistic and natural methods of controlling depression.

The pages on Meditation and Self-Hypnosis might be helpful.

Homer Simpson and Chiropractic

I came across this video from the TV show "The Simpsons." The show uses humor to point out some rifts between mainstream, allopathic medicine and chiropractic.

How ironic that it takes a silly sit-com like "The Simpsons" to put some very real conclusions about alternative medicine/chiropractic before mainstream Americans.

Funny, huh? Or maybe not.

Depends of your point of view, I guess.

Black Cohosh Not Helpful For Menopause

Black cohosh is a popular herbal remedy used by menopausal women to relieve hot flashes and night sweats.

However, a yearlong study conducted at Group Health, a Seattle-based (WA) health plan showed little difference between the amount of relief felt by women taking black cohosh versus women taking a placebo.

The study showed women taking black cohosh had one-half less hot flash per day compared with those taking a placebo.

Women taking hormone therapy had four less hot flashes a day than the women taking the placebo.

These results were published less than a week after a report showing a drastic drop in US breast cancer cases. This decline is being associated with the corresponding drop in hormone therapy used to treat symptoms of menopause.

This latest study on black cohosh comes as a blow to many women looking for alternative therapies to hormone replacement. For now, they may need to stick to simpler, self-help methods.

1. Dress in layers.
2. Add or remove garments as needed.
3. Dress in breathable fabrics like cotton or linen.
4. Sleep in a cool room.
5. Avoid hot liquids, spicy foods, and alcohol.

A couple of holistic therapies that may help some women are meditation and self-hypnosis. Calming the mind and body can help release the excess hormones causing the hot flashes and night sweats, bringing the body back into balance.

And that is what holistic therapy is all about: balancing the mind, body, soul, and spirit.

For more on this topic, read the article
here.

Holistic Intent Meditation Page and for more on self-hypnosis, go to the Self-Hypnosis Page.

Have a Happy and Healthy Day,

Calming Visualization Exercise

Here’s a calming visualization exercise to try:

Sit or lie down in a comfortable position. Take a deep breath. Visualize that the earth beneath you has turned blue, as blue as the sky above. The earth beneath you is blue down as far as you can see.

Now see energy channels opening up on the bottom of your feet. As you inhale, visualize the blue color of the earth filling up your feet. Your breath is drawing the color blue in from the earth like blue-colored Kool-Aid through a straw. As your feet begin to fill with the color blue, you exhale blue air from your lungs through your mouth and nose. And as you exhale this blue air, you feel it carry away tension and fatigue from your body. Tension and fatigue just vanish into the air.

As you continue to breathe in this delicious blue color, it seeps into every muscle, every cell of your ankle, your calf, your knee, your thigh, up to your hip, your stomach, and your chest.

At the same time blue breath is being exhaled from your lungs, carrying away all the stress, all the anxiety, all the tension, and all the fatigue from your body.

The cool blue color is now filling your arms, your shoulders, your neck, your face, and your head. Every bone in your body is full of relaxing, calming blue color.

All the tension and fatigue has left your body. Nothing remains but cool, calm, relaxing, luxurious blue. Bask in the glorious blue color for as long as you like. Then allow it to evaporate from every pore of your body, leaving you feeling relaxed, refreshed, and completely at ease.

Visualization is one technique that uses the power of your mind to help naturally heal your body. Exercises such as this one work best when you are in a relaxed state. Try them during meditation, self-hypnosis, or yoga.

To your Health and Happiness,

Liz

Therapeutic Color Visualization

Color Visualization can be used as a natural and holistic therapy. Researchers have studied color and how it affects our moods and physical bodies. Scientists exposed subjects to specific colors either directly, by light therapy, or by changing the subject’s environment.

Their research showed that color has a profound effect on our health and well-being.

Color can stimulate the endocrine glands, the immune system, and the nervous system. Color can help balance the emotions.

Visualizing color in a specific part of the body can have a therapeutic effect, too, and can be a good stress management tool.

To provide a calming and relaxing feeling, you can visualize the color blue. Blue slows your pulse, breathing, and perspiration. It helps calm your mood.

If you have chronic fatigue, feel tense, anxious, or irritable, or carry a lot of stress, visualizing the color blue can help your body release these feelings.

I have a visualization exercise I will share with you in the next blog.

Wishing you Health and Happiness,

Liz

For the past ten years, the serious money in the Networking Industry has been made promoting fruit juice based liquid nutritional products.

Networking companies with liquid products like Noni, Vibe, SeaSilver, Acai, Mangosteen, Goji, Pomegranate and Colloidal Minerals have paid hundreds of millions in bonuses to their distributors.

http://sensatiafruit.com/pre/kg072240.html

While it is still possible to join one of these companies today and earn an income, there are two reasons why it is not possible to earn the sort of income you will be able to generate with SenSatiaFruit™.

1) To earn the really huge six figure monthly bonus checks, you must build a really huge group. To achieve that result, it is much easier if you start promoting the opportunity before 100,000 other people jump in.

2) All of the existing fruit juice based liquid nutritional products are about to become obsolete. And yes, we are serious, very serious, about that totally factual statement.
You now have the opportunity to benefit from knowing about the most significant advance in the history of nutritional technology...BEFORE anyone else does.

Tips To Strengthen Your Immunity

As we enter the cold and flu season, at least here in North America, I thought we would go over some tips on boosting your Immune System.

Protect your cells with antioxidants. Vitamins C and E stimulate immunity and protect against cancer by neutralizing free radicals. Vitamin A also helps strengthen immune cells. The minimum daily requirement is 1,000 RE (found in 1 carrot) for vitamin A, 60 mg. (1 orange) for vitamin C and 8-10 mg. (2 tbsp. vegetable oil) for vitamin E.

Gain energy with oxygen. Get plenty of exercise to ensure you are getting adequate fresh air. This allows more oxygen to be exchanged between your blood and the air in your lungs and speeds metabolism, so that you gain more energy from the nutrients you eat. Feeding your body properly is important all the time, but especially now when it will be attacked by the flu virus and various other bacteria. Try to eat organic fruits and vegetables when possible.

Strengthen your thymus gland. The thymus gland, located in the upper chest behind the breast bone, produces the immune-system cells that help fight infection. Unfortunately, this organ shrinks as we age, and its effectiveness gradually diminishes. Here’s a quick and easy way to stimulate the thymus gland and boost your immune system: Every morning, tap on the middle of the breast bone with your fingers for about five minutes. This is an Acupressure exercise.

Hot and cold showers. Begin your morning with a warm shower. After a few minutes, step aside and change the water temperature to lukewarm or cold. Place your right leg back in the shower first, then slowly place your whole body under the flow of invigorating water. This is a form of Hydrotherapy, a holistic method that uses water to stimulate the body to heal.

Stress reduction. We’ve all heard this one before. Scientific studies show that stress weakens your immunity. Try relaxation techniques such as yoga or meditation to help you cope with stress. Drinking chamomile or valerian herbal tea and aromatherapy also help reduce stress.

Try this immune system cocktail. Put three carrots, one orange, one apple and half a beet through a juicer and drink. Make a fresh batch of this drink every day.

A healing inhalation for sinuses. Enjoy a hot steam bath with mint oil, which kills bacteria on the mucous membranes and stimulates the formation of antibodies. Or boil a pot of water with a few drops of essential oil of peppermint or use eucalyptus if you have a stuffy nose. Then make a tent with a towel over the pot (not while it's still on the stove, you don't want to burn the house down) and place the towel over your head. This is good for your skin, too.

Extra tip. Keep the indoor humidity level between 30 and 50 percent so that the mucous membranes in the nose don’t dry out. This will help protect the cilia, the fine hairs that line the nose and act as a barrier to keep germs from penetrating the body. If you have a wood-burning stove, keep a pot of water on top of it with essential oil of tea tree in it. Tea tree oil is great at killing germs in the air.

Echinacea. One of the most effective and popular herbal remedies for strengthening the immune system is Echinacea. Recently there has been a US government funded study discounting the effectiveness of this herb. However thirteen high-quality European studies found quite the opposite. According to one, “Echinacea (when taken at the first sign of a cold for 8 to 10 days) reduced cold symptoms or shortened their duration.”

So what do you do if you do come down with the flu or a cold?

Try this:

OSCILLOCOCCINUM:

Take at the first sign of flu symptoms. The #1 OTC flu medicine in France and the #1 homeopathic flu medicine in the U.S.

SAMBUCOL

The elderberry extract developed by a virologist in Israel. This product is inexpensive and proven to be 99% EFFECTIVE! Available in a children’s formula, also. I take this all through the cold and flu season.

Why Go Certified Organic?

The organic movement began at the same time as industrialised agriculture. It evolved through the ’50s and ’60s with the launch of such books as "Silent Spring", by Rachel Carson, which exposed the toxic bio-accumulative effects of pesticides.

During the ’70s the development of the organic market was stimulated by growing
consumer interest in health and nutrition and the increasing awareness of the importance of preserving the natural environment.

More recently the movement has been given significant impetus by events such as outbreaks of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE or Mad Cow Disease), and the controversy of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), which have motivated people to search for healthy alternatives.
And this growth continues by leaps and bounds.

If you are looking for REAL ORGANIC products produced without the use of synthetic chemicals and GMO's you must purchase products which have been organically certified with a leading independent certifying body such as the:

ACO (Australian Certified Organic)

USDA (US Department of Agriculture)

5 Benefits of Choosing Certified Organic:

1. Good for the soil Organic systems rely on a modern and scientific understanding of ecology and soil science, while also depending on traditional methods of crop rotations to ensure fertility and weed and pest control.

2. Good for the environment Organic systems aim to reduce dependence on non-renewable resources. Organic production aims at all times towards sustainability whilst having best management of the environment and wildlife as a priority.

3. Good for people Organic based ingredients have been shown in a number of studies to contain more vitamins, nutrients and cancer-fighting antioxidants than non-organic ingredients.

4. No synthetic chemicals Organic systems prohibit the use of artificial chemicals, pesticides and fertilisers.

5. No GMO's Certified Organic products are produced without GMOs (Genetically Modified Organism), which are prohibited in the standards for organic food and farming.

A number of people are going to a vegetarian diet and many are choosing Organic fruits and vegetables. If we are so concerned about what we put IN our bodies, shouldn't we be just as concerned about what we put ON our bodies?

Your skin is your body's largest organ. Many lotions, creams, bath products, and cosmetics are readily absorbed through your skin. Do you know what's in YOUR personal care products?

The next time you pick up a bottle of hand lotion or facial moisturizer, even shampoo, look at the list of ingredients. Does the list include: ammonium/sodium lauryl sulfate ( usually contaminated with nitrosamines, cancer-causing agents), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) (toluene has a long list of health hazards, is also harmful to unborn child), paraben preservatives- methyl, propyl, butyl, ethyl (causes irritation to skin, eyes, respiratory tract, can cause rash in sensitive people) propylene/butylene glycol (PG) ( penetrates the skin quickly and causes damage to protein and cellular structure, concentrations in stick deodorant more concentrated than in most industrial uses, EPA warns against skin contact to prevent brain, liver and kidney abnormalities) and the list goes on. For a partial list go to Try My Organics and click on the Education tab and then on the Toxic Ingredients link.

And remember none of your products that contain these ingredients, and they will contain some of these toxic chemicals, carry a warning label of any kind. Education is the only way to protect yourself from hazards in your environment. The government, the pharmaceutical companies, the cosmetics industry, NOBODY else is going to do it for you.

Wishing you good health and happiness,
Liz

Holistic? Naturopathic? Allopathic? Confused? Part 2

There are several terms used to refer to the type of medicine practiced in the Western world. The terms "traditional" or "allopathic" or "conventional" basically refer to this type of medicine. This approach to health is relatively new in human history when compared to the Chinese healing arts of 5000 years ago.

Traditional Medicine is scientific-based medicine. You must have data, you must have proof, and you must be able to show your proof in a laboratory setting.

Traditional Medicine believes something physical is present to cause disease, like a virus or a bacterium, and you must be treated for that disease by a prescription drug or, if necessary, surgery in order to get better.

As more and more people search for alternatives to prescription drugs and surgery, Holistic Medicine and its natural remedies will continue to offer safe and effective treatments.

Traditional Medicine will always be the major player in emergency care and acute, life-threatening illnesses. Ultimately it is up to each individual to decide which treatment option is best for his or her needs.

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), a branch of the National Institutes of Health, has gathered compelling evidence of how well Holistic Health techniques work in treating disease and promoting health and well-being. You can keep up-to-date with the latest research at the NCCAM website: http://nccam.nih.gov/.

For further details on the many healing arts and therapies listed in Part 1 of this article, you can visit the
Holistic Intent website to learn more. Sign up for the free new newsletter for weekly tips on holistic health care and the latest research into the natural healing therapies.

Holistic? Naturopathic? Allopathic? Confused? Part 1

You see the terms Holistic Medicine and Alternative Medicine a lot on the Internet today. They seem to be used interchangeably. But do you really understand the meaning of the terms? What is Holistic Medicine and how is it different from Traditional Medicine? It can be confusing.

The Holistic Approach to Medicine emphasizes the connection between mind, body, and spirit when considering treatment for an illness. The body as a whole is evaluated along with the person’s physical and spiritual environment.

The patient’s mental attitude about his health or disease is just as important as any physical treatment. A positive mental outlook will almost guarantee a positive outcome.

The Holistic Practitioner works with the patient to create a wellness program that supports the body’s natural ability to heal itself. The patient is encouraged to take charge of his own health, becoming responsible for working toward a life of optimal health and well-being.

Holistic Medicine is Natural Medicine that treats the cause of the disease. The symptoms are not just smothered with prescribed medication. The practitioner uses the symptoms as a roadmap that leads to the root cause of the disease. Once the cause of the disease is found, it can be eliminated.

Holistic Medicine falls under the umbrella of Naturopathy or Naturopathic Medicine. Naturopaths do not prescribe drugs. They use natural plants and plant extracts to treat and heal. Naturopaths use whatever therapy the individual patient needs to help the body boost its natural ability to heal itself.

By boosting the immune system, the body can become a fortress against invading diseases, viruses, and bacteria.

The ultimate goal of the Naturopath is the prevention of illness. Through education, the Naturopath hopes diet, herbal supplements, proper exercise, and a healthy living environment can prevent disease from occurring in the first place.

Natural, holistic therapies include:

Acupuncture,
Traditional Chinese Medicine, which focuses on Tui Na (a form of massage), Qigong, and diet,
Chiropractic,
Feng Shui,
Guided Imagery and Visualization,
Hydrotherapy,
Macrobiotics,
NLP- Neuro-Linguistic Programming,
Sound Healing/Music Therapy,
Homeopathy,
Medical Herbalism,
Aromatherapy, and
Reflexology.

The Holistic Practitioner may also use such techniques as Meditation and Self-Hypnosis to help the patient change or deal with lifestyle and environmental factors.

Ultimately the patient is educated to make lifestyle changes that will lead to optimal health and well-being. This state of health will prevent further illness from occurring. This is the goal of Holistic Medicine and Naturopathy: Prevention of disease.

Alternative Medicine usually refers to a method you would use instead of a traditional medical treatment, say diet, exercise, meditation, and massage therapy instead of chemotherapy and radiation treatment for cancer.

Traditional medical doctors often refer to the “alternative” techniques they use in their practice, like Massage Therapy, as “complementary” to the drug and surgical procedures they regularly use.

So Complementary Medicine is used “along with” Traditional Medicine whereas Alternative Medicine is used “instead of” Traditional Medicine.

Reflexology- May the Force Be With Your Fingers

Reflexology is a holistic healing technique in which pressure with the thumbs and fingers is applied to “reflex” zones that have been mapped out on the feet and hands. By applying pressure and stimulating the feet or hands you are increasing circulation and promoting healing in the corresponding part of the body.

Therefore stress and other conditions can be improved in the same way an acupuncturist can break up blockages in chi using acupuncture needles. Yes, I think Reflexology involves more than just a foot massage.

Reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, India and China but it wasn’t until 1913 when Dr. William Fitzgerald introduced the therapy to the West as “zone therapy” that it became well-known to the western world. He noted that reflex areas on the feet and hands were linked to areas and organs in the same zone on the body.

According to the zone theory the body is divided into ten equal longitudinal zones (five on the left and five on the right) running through the body from the crown of the head to the tips of the toes. The five zones on the left correspond to the left foot; the five on the right side correspond to the right foot.

In the 1930’s Eunice Ingham further developed this zone theory. As she worked with Dr. Joe Shelby Riley, an osteopath, she observed that congestion or tension in any part of the foot was mirrored in the corresponding part of the body. She plotted these “reflex” points on a foot map and the practice became known as Reflexology.

The Reflexologist learns the “reflex buttons” on the hands and feet which connect to all the organs and glands. When stimulated these “reflex buttons” send out a surge of healing energy, encouraging the corresponding body part to heal itself.

Your feet are extensively connected to your nervous system through the 7200 nerve endings in each foot. These nerves are part of the sympathetic nervous system that senses pain and pressure, hot and cold, wet and dry, etc. and that lead to the “fight or flight” response.

Proper stimulation of these nerves can induce the “relaxation response.” This will produce a cascading effect, reducing stress throughout the entire nervous system. Your body as a whole will relax and begin to repair the damage caused by excess stress.

Studies have shown Reflexology to be a natural therapeutic approach to health and healing and consider it safe and effective. Reflexology can be performed anywhere, requires no special equipment, is noninvasive and is an avenue for the healing power of human touch. It is inexpensive, low-risk, flexible, and easily applied.

Several studies have shown Reflexology to be effective in pain relief. The physiological response to pain can create harmful effects that prolong the body’s recovery after illness or surgery. Patients often report mild to moderate pain even after pain medication has been given.

In patients hospitalized with cancer, all had significant and immediate relief from pain and nausea after a ten minute foot massage. Patients also felt more relaxed and less anxious.

Subjects in another group showed decreases in sympathetic responses to pain (e.g., decreased heart rate and respiratory rate) during a Reflexology session. However there were no changes in the blood pressure of the patients, seeming to show the method was basically safe.

Other studies have shown Reflexology to be effective for:
• Back Pain
• Migraine
• Depression
• Anxiety
• Infertility
• Arthritis
• Sleep Disorders
• Hormonal Imbalances
• Premenstrual Syndrome
• Sports Injuries
• Digestive Disorders, and
• Stress-related Conditions

Reflexology will work for anyone and everyone. You don’t have to believe it will work for it to have a positive outcome for you. The key is relaxation. The more fully you allow yourself to relax during the session, the better your outcome will be.
