Feng Shui
Feng Shui (pronounced “fung shway”) is all about Energy: the “chi”
energy that runs along Meridians or Channels within our bodies
and how our Environment affects the chi;
The Earth Energy and how it Flows along the hills and valleys, creating Wind Patterns and Rock Formations; and the Cosmic Energy from above that gives us a never-ending supply of Energy from Sunlight, and causes the change of Seasons, the Dark and Light of day and night, the Yin and Yang that requires constant attention to maintain Balance in our lives.
Feng Shui (literally “wind water”) is one of the Ancient Chinese Practices that manipulates chi to maintain Balance or correct Imbalance in a person’s life. Acupuncture, QiGong, Chinese Herbalism, and Tui Na (a form of Chinese Massage) all manipulate chi in some form to improve a person’s Well-Being.
Although Feng Shui is a very old Chinese Practice, through the years different sects have formed so that now there are Eight Schools of Feng Shui. The Compass School and the Black Hat School are the two most popular forms of Feng Shui practiced in the West. The Compass School is more “Old School” Feng Shui while Black Hat Feng Shui is a more “Westernized” version.
Feng Shui works with The Five Elements, or The Five Energies. They are Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood. If one of these energies becomes Too Powerful, it can Diminish one of the other energies. Then your Chi can become Imbalanced, making your body Sick or your Wealth energy flow away from you, depending on the type of energy lost.
Feng Shui also works with the Twelve Animals of The Chinese Zodiac. They are The Rat, The Ox, The Tiger, The Rabbit, The Dragon, The Snake, The Horse, The Sheep, The Monkey, The Rooster, The Dog, and The Pig. Your personal animal is determined by your year of birth.
In Feng Shui you also use the Chinese Calendar to find out which year corresponds to your family of the Eight Trigrams of the I Ching (the Chinese Book of Divination or Changes). The Eight Trigrams are Mountain, Heaven, Lake, Fire, Water, Earth, Thunder, and Wind. Your trigram is also determined by your date of birth. This is your personal Energy Pattern or Ba Gua (bah goo wah).
The Ba Gua is octagonal and divided into Eight Sections or Life Aspirations. Each section corresponds to a direction on the compass. If you align the Bottom of the Ba Gua with North on the compass, the Life Aspirations are (starting at the bottom and going clock-wise): Career Prospects, Education, Family & Health, Wealth & Prosperity, Recognition & Fame, Marriage Prospects, Children, and Influential People (Black Hat Feng Shui).
Once you have found the Locations of your Life Aspirations in your house or room, you can then Influence the Energy in that location.
There are various ways to do this. A few are:
Place a Bright Light in your Career Prospects Area if you are looking for a job or need a promotion. But don’t put a Plant here. This is a Water location and plants are Earth Energy. Earth Energy can overpower Water Energy. You can put a Fish Aquarium here but not a Crystal, which is Earth Energy.
Mirrors will Attract, Reflect, Expand, or Duplicate Energy. If one area with bad energy faces an area with good energy, place a mirror on the wall facing the good energy. The mirror will reflect the good energy and diminish the bad energy on the opposite side.
Faceted Crystals will Disperse Negative Energy. The many surfaces on the crystal break up the negative energy and send it off harmlessly into numerous directions.
Wind Chimes will create Movement where Energy has pooled or become Stagnate. Use Wood or Bamboo Chimes to Increase Earth Energy or Brass Chimes to Increase Metal Energy.
Water Fountains that sound like a babbling brook are great to add wherever you need more Water Energy.
Another tool used in Feng Shui is called the View Finder. The View Finder is based on an Ancient Chinese Model called the Five Animals: the Tortoise, the Phoenix, the Tiger, the Dragon, and the Snake. This tool is used to the Power Position in a room.
In the View Finder, you are in the Center or Snake position surrounded by the other animals. At your Back is the Tortoise. In Front of you is the Phoenix. To your Right is a Tiger. To your Left, a Dragon.
Each animal is associated with one of the Five Energies. The Tortoise is represented by the color Dark Blue for Water; its Energy Descends or Pushes Downward. The Phoenix is Red for Fire; its Energy Raises Up. The Tiger is White for Metal; its Energy Condenses or Pulls Inward. The Dragon is Green for Wood; its Energy Expands Outward.
Let’s think about the different animals for a moment. Psychologically you feel Vulnerable from the Rear because you can not see behind you. That’s why you want the Strong, Solid Shell of the Tortoise behind you to Protect you.
When you look Forward, you want a Clear, Unobstructed View over a Wide Field of Vision. This is what the Phoenix can give you.
To your Right you have the Tiger, an animal of Strength, capable of Uncontrolled Action. You want to keep objects Low to the ground here, where you have control over them like a tamed wildcat.
To your Left lies the Dragon. He is Far-Sighted and Wise, but also Stable, symbolizing our Desire for a Long, Happy Life and a Calm, Knowing Mind. This is where you should place Tall Objects that reach Above Eye Level.
So you would prefer a Chair with a Tall Solid Back and Arms as opposed to a Bench with No Back or Arms.
Even better: This chair would be up against the Wall facing the Door with a Low End Table on the Right and a Tall Plant on the Left, at least Head High. Or maybe another End Table on the left with a Lamp on it.
The next time you walk into a Waiting Room, pay attention to Where You Naturally Sit. What type of Chair do you pick? Where is it Located? When you consider the View Finder, you’ll find the choices you make very interesting.
You can use this model for just about any occasion: which chair to sit in, where to sit in a room, where to sit at a table, where to sit at a restaurant or theater.
You can also use the View Finder as a model for Placing Furniture when you decorate your home or office. Use it to choose the Best Position in the room for your Bed; the Best Position for the Sofa and Chairs in a Conversation Area so that everyone will feel Comfortable; the Best Position for the Chairs in relation to the Doors and Windows.
I could go on and on about this subject, but I’ll save you from complete boredom right now.
I will cover the topic extensively in my upcoming e-book on MANIFEST BETTER HEALTH WITH FENG SHUI.
Watch for it.
