QiGong

Qigong (“chee gung”) is an ancient Chinese holistic health and healing form that is one of the fundamental practices of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is used extensively by tens of millions of people daily for preventative medicine and self-healing.

Basic Qigong movements are easy to learn and easy to do. Qigong has no harmful side effects, is free, doesn’t require an expert, and everyone can learn to do it.

The practice of Qigong strengthens the mind/body connection. Qigong practitioners develop an awareness of Qi sensations in their bodies and use their mind, or intent, to guide the Qi.

Continued practice reinforces the body’s inclination toward balance and therefore toward optimal health and full potential.

Qigong practice combines two concepts: the concept of “Qi,” the vital energy, or life force, that flows through all things in the Universe, including the body; and “gong,” the skill or self-discipline that leads to the ability of mastering the Qi.

Medical Qigong for health and healing consists of four parts that are necessary to balance your Qi:

  • breathing exercises,
  • postures or physical movements,
  • your mind and meditation and
  • special sounds.

Qigong is all about learning to keep your Qi in balance. Qi has two basic forms: Yin and Yang. Yin energy is your sleeping body, female, water, spiritual life and earth. Yang energy is your physical body, male, active, fire and sky. These two energies must be kept in balance. Too much of either one will cause energy to become trapped in a part of the body. This will cause illness.

Qigong breathing is one way to keep the Qi energy balanced. When you breathe in, pull your lower stomach in a little. When you breathe out, let your stomach out a little.

Breathing this way balances the Yin and Yang energy. The upper body houses the Yang energy and the lower body houses the Yin energy. By pulling your stomach in a little as you inhale and letting it out as you exhale you are helping the two energies “talk” to each other. One reason you get sick is because the Yin energy and Yang energy get out of touch with each other. You can help them communicate better with your breath.

Visualization and focus are an important part of Qigong breathing. As you breathe in, imagine your entire body taking in energy through every pore in your skin.

Then focus all of that energy into a pool just behind your navel. This is called your “Lower Dantian,” one of the major energy centers in your body.

As you exhale visualize any discomfort, pain, fatigue, disease in your body changing into smoke and pouring out of your body, shooting off to the ends of the Universe like a rocket.

Visualization and focus will greatly enhance your Qigong breathing technique.

Qigong movements and postures are necessary to open the energy channels in the body and increase the flow of Qi in the body. Simply sitting or standing with your spine straight helps open the back channel which is the governing channel in the body.

When you open your hand and spread apart your fingers, you not only open the six channels in the hand, you also open the lung channel. Spread your toes and move your heels up and down and you help open numerous channels, including the kidney channels where your reserve Qi stays.

Qigong and Your Mind. The mind is a powerful healer. Your subconscious mind is even more powerful than your conscious mind. This is the part (your subconscious) that you use when you meditate. When you learn to “let go.”

In Qigong Meditation we talk about going into the Emptiness, the Emptiness of the Universe. The Emptiness is a place of perfect peace and understanding. It is a quiet and peaceful place. A place where you can go to completely renew yourself. The deeper you go into the Emptiness the faster you can experience a complete healing- a healing of your mind, body, soul and spirit.

I have more information about quieting the mind and meditation on the Meditation Webpage elsewhere on this website.

Qigong and the Special Sounds. Sounds have been used in meditation and to help balance the Qi for many centuries. Different sounds or chants have different meanings. Buddhists believe “ong” to be the fundamental sound of the Universe. “ooo” is believed to be the sound of the beginning of life in the Universe. “Hong” is thought to be the sound of hidden power of life in the Universe.

Ong” means the heart of wisdom. This sound can help with problems in the eyes, the ears, nose and all kinds of headaches and head problems.

OOO” is the sound of summer. It helps heal all the problems with the heart system.

“Hong” means the enlightenment of a person with the wisdom of the Universe, or with the power of God. This sound can help heal problems in the joints of the body and the legs.

As with all things, sounds are energy, too. And each sound has its own frequency and vibration. The unique vibration of each sound can help open up different energy channels in the body and help the body heal. Sounds will help you in your meditation, also. Adding sounds to your meditations will carry you into the Emptiness faster and deeper.

Several different styles of Qigong are available today. They range from soft internal styles like Tai Chi to the vigorous external styles like Kung Fu. You can do some research on your own to find a style that looks interesting to you. Learn QiGong with Gaiam.

I practice Spring Forest Qigong developed by Chunyi Lin. Master Lin believes we are all born with the ability to heal ourselves. He developed Spring Forest Qigong so that everyone would be able to perform the exercises.

I have personally spoken with Master Lin and participated in a group healing over the telephone with him. He is truly an amazing healer. I can honestly recommend his program from personal experience.
